Raising Funds for Cancer Research UK: Almost 5 years ago I left a wonderful 17 year corporate career and set up Clearsight Executive this has afforded me many terrific opportunities and experiences including the chance to 'give back' to others. To-date my initiatives have been quite humble but this year I have decided to use my professional skills more directly with charitable giving by setting up this Coaching-for-Charity initiative. So far seven hundred pounds has been raised with a target of two thousand. To find out more
A Leaders Guide To Story-Telling: We all love a good story...whether it's the interesting way the news is told on TV, a memorable story from childhood past or perhaps a humorous and uforgettable tale down the pub. All good stories invoke emotion. In this book Denning not only does a great job at convincing the reader of the merits of story-telling but also provides a step-by-step guide of how to integrate story-telling into your leadership style. A great addition to any leaders library.
10 Tips to Greater Emotional Intelligence: Before I offer you the tips to greater emotional intelligence it may be useful to share with you what emotional intelligence actually is. There are many definition, most of them very dull and boring, but the one that captures the essence of EI for me is that of Aristotle more than two thousand years ago "Anyone can become angry - that is easy. But to be angry at the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not easy." So being emotionally intelligent is not about denying your feelings or indeed giving them free reign, it's about being aware of what's going on for you, for others and being able to respond in the most powerful and effective way. It is the art of true leadership and to get some insights into what you can do today then see tips>>
Free! Behavioural Report: If you've ever commented on how good someone is at their job, or perhaps how poor, I have no doubt you will have described that person in terms of behaviours..."too aggressive...too slow...not a people person...stickler for the rules...too cavalier...etc." For the first 10 lucky people to contact us we are offering the chance to receive a FREE in-depth report on how you behave and how others experience you, how you like to communicate, what you require from a work environment and how you respond to challenge/problems, people, change and rules. To take advantage of this offer simply email your contact details to info@clearsightexecutive.com and state that you're interested in a Free Behavioural Report. And remember we are only offering this free report to the first 10 people so be quick...

ClearsightNews January 2009
Welcome to ClearsightNews and Happy New Year. As we leave 2008 behind us it's only natural that we reflect on what has been and what will be and whilst that reflection can have a melancholic tinge it is none-the-less a healthy and important part of how we learn and move forward. In this edition of ClearsightNews we will examine the themes of reflection and explore how to harness that learning to shape the life that you want.
I hope you enjoy.

With Your Kind Permission: As Christmas approaches I normally leave a few days free to catch up on paperwork and the all-important Christmas card writing. Christmas cards are an important way for me to acknowledge each and every one of you, to say thank you and to offer my genuine best wishes. Unfortunately this year I was caught by the flu virus that has been so prevalent in the UK and I was in no fit state to do much but rest. Prompted by a friend's action I had already been thinking about abandoning Christmas cards altogether (at least in paper form) and opting instead to make a charitable donation so whilst feeling sorry for myself I made a commitment to do just that as soon as I was on the mend. That just left the choice of which charity? This was something which I did not have to ponder too long since on my immediate recovery I received the appalling news that my father had suffered an acute stroke in the early hours of Boxing Day so with your kind permission I would like to make a donation to the Stroke Association in-lieu of sending Christmas cards. I hope you understand and I very much appreciate your support. If you'd like to find out more about the Stroke Association or perhaps make a charitable donation yourself then please see the link below.
Jonathan Livingston Seagull: This simple and extremely short book describes through metaphor the importance, richness and reward of pursuing dreams. Whether you're living your dream life already or stuck in a place of unhappiness this book will help you soar to a higher plane.
Creating the Life You Want - Part I Life Purpose: A natural part of being human is to seek reassurance and security in daily patterns and habits. Whilst many of these habits are helpful and supportive of our development and growth it's all too easy to become engrossed in the relentless onslaught of 'doing' with little or no idea of how that serves us beyond the expectations and measures of success that we allow others to place upon us as sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, employees and managers. Whilst this trance-like state seems like a viable option, for many it's only a matter of time before such questions as "what's it all about?" or "where am I heading?" begin to appear along with the inevitable feelings of dissatisfaction and sense of being lost.
Wherever you are on your life's journey the steps to Creating the Life You Want will allow you to focus more on 'being' rather than doing, will help you take conscious control of your life and will provide a framework for you to design and take full ownership of the life that you want. As I'm sure you will appreciate such an undertaking demands, and deserves, time effort and so we will take time over the forthcoming months to fully explore each of the 3 steps. Step 1 will focus on understanding and defining your life purpose, with steps 2 and 3 examining your life balance and actions to create the life you want. Read More>>

ClearsightNews September 2008
Welcome to ClearsightNews. There seems to be a lot going on in the world at the moment and so much focus is now on the financial community. We hear talk, in what seems like every news report, of the stock market latest and how everything is based upon the absence of market confidence and yet amongst this mayhem we have the world's greatest investor, Warren Buffet, buying into the very troubled Goldman Sachs. Isn't it funny how people can see the same situation and interpret it differently? As Epictetus, the Greek Stoic philosopher, said "People are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them" and so in this edition of ClearsightNews we will be taking a special look at the stories we tell ourselves and how that can make or break our success.
I hope you enjoy.

Hostage at the Table: No it's not the latest Bruce Willis epic or even a wry observation on the position that Ben Bernanke finds himself in at the moment! It is in fact a terrific book by veteran hostage negotiator George Kohlrieser. I know it seems tough out there but you may think that I've gone too far recommending a book by someone so battle-harden, but you see what George Kohlrieser has produced is a great insight into the human psyche that every leader would do well to read. As leaders we face conflict every day, and yes, face the prospect of a 'gun' being held to our heads except the gun is so often made up of our own beliefs and self-imposed limitations.
Thinking Traps or How to Control Your Inner Voices: At a recent presentation I asked the audience about voices in their heads that stopped them getting what they wanted. Some got it and the rest...well the rest just looked at me as if I was saying something odd. Imagine that! Yet even those that had thought I'd lost it soon realised in that space of silence that they were indeed listening to a voice along the lines of "...what the hell is he talking about, I don't have voices in my head...". You may think of language as a means of communicating with eachother but in fact it's prime and intial use is to communicate with ourselves. Language is how we make sense of and shape our own reality through an internal dialogue. This dialogue is often made up of patterns, some helpful but some not so helpful and there is a set of patterns called Thinking Traps which can be downright debilitating and lead to misery and failure. The good news is that we can all do something about this given a little practice and commitment. Read more>>

Ever Recruited the Wrong Person?
Recently we've been looking at further ways to support you and have
been working hard on a few new products. There is one in particular
which has created a real buzz. It's a way of targeting candidate
recruitment and uses an online psychometric tool to compare candidate
behaviour to an ideal 'job model'. It's really people's behaviours
that predict success. How many times have you said/heard things like
"he's just too detailed" or "she's far too aggressive in her style" or
"I wish he'd take more risks". All behaviours have a place but the
wrong behavioural set in the wrong role spells disaster! Read more>>

Are You Living Your Life in a Box?
A few weeks ago I was in London heading for Euston station when I saw
someone huddled in a doorway with a collection of boxes for a shelter.
People scurried by desperately hoping not to make eye contact and it
struck me that the homeless man was not the only one in a box. Each of
the passers-by was in a box also, a mental one. A box which separated
them, their values, prejudices and beliefs for everyone else and I was
reminded of a book, "Leadership and self deception: Getting out of the
box", which was recommended to me by a client. It's a simple yet
profound book and despite it's title is relevant to all aspect and
walks of life. If you find yourself in conflict with someone or
communication and effective relationships are important to you then
this is a must-read.
I wonder...will you dare to step out of your box?
Liberate Yourself While Empowering Others. Your six step, tried and tested, guide to effective delegation. Read more>>
The Leadership Paradox - Giving Up to Succeed. Several years ago I decided to treat myself and my wife to a holiday on
the wonderful island of Santorini. We chose a luxury boutique hotel
with a price tag to match! The hotel was everything we expected and
more, even down to the iced face cloths and free cocktails brought to
us as we basked in the heat. It was mid-summer... Read more>>
